GM Goes Banko

We knew that it was coming. Tomorrow's the day that General Motors officially goes bankrupt. This is what happens when you try to fill a bath tub with the drain open. No matter how much water you pour into the tub, it'll never get filled with the drain open!

Now that GM is legally bankrupt, there are opportunities and challenges which were not here, recently. Challenges: A tarnished image. Americans will not make a big ticket purchase from a "loser." I have been selling GM products for six days a week for 14 years. I've...eh...noticed this and a few other things, too.

Closing franchises: This is interesting. The public looks on with morbid interest and curiosity as failing automakers choose to sever relationships with locally owned dealerships. These are businesses which do not cost the automaker a dime! These are businesses which contribute to their local areas with local tax revenue, charitable donations, local employment, local choice. When one of these businesses vanishes, so do the benefits! You get less of the local benefits that you have enjoyed and the automaker saves no money and has fewer places in which to sell their product.

With so many divisions, you would think that GM would have an advantage over Honda and Toyota. GM could have made their individual divisions unique from each other. Instead, they made them painfully similar. An example would be making the exact same mini-van with six different nameplates on it. How dynamic is that?

My recommendations for GM? Delay the 2010 model year debut. Sell the remaining 2009 inventory, most of which is sitting in limbo at or near the assembly plants. Sell these vehicles with tremendous incentives! Money talks! Quality is important, but money is more important. Here's what I have found - people will buy a car that lists for $25,000 with a $5,000 rebate much more than they would buy a $20,000 car with no rebate. (A sunroof and DVD combination will always win!) It doesn't matter much which car is built better. With the $25,000 car, there is the $5,000 victory for the buyer! Oh, resale value will be pretty much the same on both cars.

So, GM, here's what you should be working on:

Image - portray yourself as a winner! Advertise that you are dynamic and heroic. Somebody will believe it!
Fuel Economy - When gas is expensive, most people pay more attention to the amount of money it takes to fill-up! They should be looking at their MPG!
Price/Incentives - make the price look good with a big rebate and/or low rate long term financing.

Do I think that the GM bankruptcy will work? Well, yes and no. I think that GM will continue to fade over the years into obscurity. The short term future of the retail car business is USED CARS. This will last for about 5 years. At that time the bulk of the used cars will be older so we will need some newer used cars. The lower supply of used cars will cause the used car pices to go up - New Cars will become a popular choice, again. Think about it.

Friday Foto - Sophie Howard

Let's see,Sophie Howard...
First, let's say that all that you see, here, is natural. Sophie is 26 years old and is from Southport, England. I am told that she has 12 tattoos.

Fascinating!

Going Green!

It's become fashionable for the media to suggest that we should all suddenly become responsible and conserve energy and preserve the environment, in short, to "Go Green!"

Well, the place where I work "went green." At considerable expense, we converted our Body Shop's paint inventory to environmently friendly-based automobile exterior paint. I sent a news release to both of the local TV stations. I thought that, hey! each of the stations have space on their web sites devoted to the mission of going green. Right? Wrong! No response from the media. Not an interview, not an "atta-boy," nadda.

I can't believe it! At my advanced age - I'm still learning things!

Obama Picks A Judge

I was thinking about this over the weekend. Apparently Obama was, too, as he announced his choice to the Supreme Court. Our choices differ. His is federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor, praising her as "an inspiring woman" with both the intellect and compassion to interpret the Constitution wisely.

My choice would have been Jeanine Pirro who would have brought some no nonsense style and humor to the high court. See the nice little picture. She smiles nicely and she's carrying a law book and a gavel!

Maybe next time...

GT Revisits Indy

Yes, it's been a while since I visited the brickyard. I relearned a few lessons. The first lesson is that the drivers in the Indianapolis 500 are divided into three categories. Of the 33 starters, I say that 12 or 15 are exceptional at what they do. A handful have some potential. Every year there seems to be a small handful of flunkies who belong on small town dirt tracks, at best. The picture is of Mario Moraes, of Brazil, hitting the wall on the first lap as Danica Patrick passes. Moraes is in the last of my three groups of drivers, along with anybody hired by A.J. Foyt. Jr. to drive his cars.

Let's talk about Danica Patrick. The Indy 500 faithful love her! They're on a first name basis with her. It's not "Patrick," it's "Danica!" (And, I think she pays her taxes!) The fans at the 500 have always welcomed female drivers. I was at the race when Janet Guthrie broke the gender line at Indy, and the fans loved it! Janet never wore a swimsuit in Sports Illustrated, but, we still loved her!

Helio Castroneves took the checkered flag, today. I saw him pass Scott Dixon on the main straight, right in front of me, as the "yellow" turned to "green." Ballsey move - the crowd loved it. While I think the guy is tax cheating scum, he sure can drive a race car! And he's handsome with an adorable accent! Is this a great country or what?

Pest Control Co. Charged With Animal Cruelty

I thought that this was interesting.....

HAZLET, N.J. (AP) - The owner of a New Jersey pest control company has been charged with animal cruelty after a squirrel was found dead in a rooftop trap.

The Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals charged Kathleen Buck, owner of Critter Ridder, on Friday.

Chief Buddy Amato says a professional complex hired Critter Ridder to help get rid of the squirrel. He says a trap was set Wednesday for the animal, and no one returned to check on it.

Amato says the squirrel was found "cooked to death on the hot roof" Thursday afternoon.

Buck faces four counts of animal cruelty, including one that cites her for not providing the squirrel with adequate food, water and shelter.

She calls the situation a "misunderstanding," and says customers usually call when an animal is caught.

Memorial Day

It was first designed to honor the fallen soldiers of the American Civil War. There have, of course, been wars since, giving us more and more to remember. The picture is of the 172.5 acre American Cemetery and Memorial which is situated on a cliff overlooking Omaha Beach and the English Channel in Colleville-sur Mer, France.

I think it might be a good idea for each of us to take a moment, this weekend, to think about the brave people who sacrificed their young lives for our freedom.

Friday Foto - Claudia De Falchi

For the holiday weekend, we travel to Roma to find Claudia De Falchi. You can also find her on You Tube. I don't have any personal information on Claudia. After all, I know that you're dying to know what her favorite color is or her favorite ice cream flavor.

No Green Day At Wal-Mart

They may have the nation's most popular CD, no thanks to Wal-Mart! I'm not a fan of Wal-Mart nor Green Day. So why the post? Well, while I believe that Green Day has every right to showcase their limited vocabulary and "adult content" on their "21st Century Breakdown" CD, Wal-Mart has every right to sell or to not sell the CD. Censorship? (How dare Wal-Mart find distaste in our music!) Yes, in a way, but only because of Wal-Mart's long-standing policy not to stock any CD with a parental advisory sticker.

How did Elvis do so well? He didn't have Wal-Mart or potty-mouth lyrics...

General Tom Headed To Indy

This Sunday is the Indianapolis 500 and for the first time in more than 20 years, I'll be there! If you've never been there, it's much more than a race! It's the beginning of Hoosier Summer! Being that it is held on Memorial Day weekend, it's a salute to fallen veterans. All during the preliminaries and the actual race, the "show" is not always on the track. Yes, there's big-time world class racing going on, but there's also an amazing hoard of humanity, many of whom put on their own little show.

I promise to take some pictures.

Byrd Hospitalized at 91

Robert Byrd of West Virginia holds the record as the longest serving Senator in US history. He's been representing WV since 1958. He makes the news, or at least this blog, since being rushed to the hospital on Friday. His office announced today that the Senator had an elevated temperature due to a minor infection. He's being treated with antibiotics and should be out of the hospital in a few days.

The statement did not say why no word was released for more than 48 hours after the senator was taken to the hospital (I guess they don't work on weekends), nor did it identify the facility where he is being treated - probably one within the Senate's HMO.

Notre Dame Graduation

I remember when Notre Dame was a Catholic University! As a lifelong practicing Catholic, I see a lot of dumb moves in the Catholic Church. Most of them involve using the money, donated by the faithful, to bury the Priests' scandals. This is serious stuff - it continues and it causes a lot of Catholics to stay away from church. Me? (Thanks for asking!) I don't worship "the church," my attention is "higher."

This brings us to the controversy surrounding the choice of having President Obama speak at the University of Notre Dame's Commencement Exercise. This doesn't sit well with a lot of people, including some within the student body, some parents, some faculty and some alums. Well, he is the President, ya know. He's in favor of abortion. The Catholic Church is opposed to abortion. The President was invited to speak. He should speak. He's smart enough to accept the invite. He's also smart enough to avoid any anti Catholic issues...like abortion. He's also smart enough to know that the fastest growing segment of the USA population is Hispanic. Their religion? Yup - Catholic.

So, if you are Catholic and you are upset about this, don't be. I wonder how many Catholics think that the President should not speak at ND while they voted for him in November? Obama speaking at Notre Dame? He's a politician! Maybe it would be suitable to invite an accomplished humanitarian or successful (job creating) businessman, to speak. You know, somebody who's not campaigning.

Friday Foto - Francoise Boufhal

Francoise Boufhal

I think you could say that Francoise Boufhal has what it takes to measure up for the Friday Foto feature! I don't know too much about her except that early in her modeling career she had trouble finding work as a lingerie model. (Whatever) I don't know much else about her. Perhaps the audience can help me out with some information on the lady...

General Tom's Economic Plan!

It came to me in a dream, as I was sleeping. This is where I find most of my dreams, but I digress... I am very concerned about our economy - both in the USA and worldwide!

I discovered what to do and here it is:

Instead of giving billions of dollars to companies that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan.

You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan:

There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force.
Pay them $1 million apiece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

1) They MUST retire. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.

2) They MUST buy a new American CAR. Forty million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed.

3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed.

It can't get any easier than that!

If more money is needed, have all members of Congress and their constituents pay their taxes...

Amen!

Farrah Fawcett

Farrah Fawcett's health is failing. Friends say that she is near the end of her two year battle with cancer. It seems odd that this disease should conquer such a lively, spirited icon. She is 62 years old.

The poster that you see, here, sold a whopping 12 million copies! It was everywhere! We remember her most for her role on Charlie's Angels. She got that role after a number of memorable TV commercials, like this one with Joe Nameth...

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of this incredible lady as her time with us nears an end.

Trump: Miss CA OK

I am sure that you heard about this, by now. Donald Trump calls a news conference and says that Miss California, Carrie Prejean, can keep her job. Score one for free speech and one for Trump's uncanny ability to bask in the limelight of free publicity...for his pageant and for himself. During the news conference, Trump noted that Miss California's opinion on marriage between a man and a woman is the exact same opinion given by our President. Why would one cause problems when the other did not?

Finally, Trump said that the "...pictures were fine!"

We agree.

Miss California On Shaky Ground

It started with Miss California answering a question during the Miss USA Pageant. She voiced an opinion against gay marriage. This falls in line with the way that most Americans think. It doesn't, however, follow the popular, hip, progressive way of thinking that the pageant judges think. (Admitted homosexual & celebrity blogger Perez Hilton was one of the judges!) She became the runner up. Most people think that a different answer to "that question" would have gotten her the crown. She could have prefaced her answer by saying something like, "Hey, I'm single - never been married! I'm a 21 year old model from California! Ask me about cosmetics!"

She also has another itsy bitsy problem....the pictures. When she was 17, she posed for some pictures - like the one, here (nice bone structure!). Even though she isn't wearing a shirt, I wouldn't really call this a nude photo.

Donald Trump and the Miss USA/Universe folks are meeting today to decide what to do about this nasty dilemma.

I predict that she will get canned. They need to make an example out of her. I don't think that Trump would be happy doing this, but the organization will say that they are forced to take action.

That's OK. Miss California can move on and become a member of the private sector where she can be free to have her picture taken wearing whatever and where she can exercise free speech. This will open more opportunities for her that the actual title would have.

Friday Foto - Brooke Banx

This week on the Friday Foto, we feature Brooke Banx. She's a young model and spokesperson. This means that she does TV commercials and print ads.

As usual, click on the picture to get the full effect!

Have a nice weekend!

Supreme Court Nominee

Craig Ferguson is one of the funniest guys that I've ever seen. Here's an exampe:

"President Obama may choose a Supreme Court nominee by the end of the week. That's fast. Nothing against the President, but doesn't it worry you that it took him 10 times longer to decide on a dog?"

I'm pretty sure that this was said in jest.

Savage: Banned in Britain

Conservative talk show host Michael (Weiner) Savage has been banned in the UK. Actually he's been banned since last October. British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith made the official announcement yesterday. The reason given was for his extreme opinions. Savage plans to sue for defamation.

Let's think about this for a minute. I see this going on quite a bit between liberals and conservatives. It seems as if disagreeing groups have little or no tolerance for each other. Is there a difference between being an opponent and being an enemy? If you disagree with me, am I therefore "mean spirited?" I listen to Michael Savage occasionally. To the best of my knowledge, there is no warrant out for his arrest. I don't think he's dangerous, on or off the radio. I don't think that his opinions are extreme. If I don't agree with something that he says, then, that's what it is - an opposing viewpoint - that's all. There's an aroma of Orwell's "Thought Police" from 1984, here. Do you think that there is a danger when we ban that with which we do not agree? For example, I have no use for rap music. Much of the content is offensive to me and I find the sound to be repulsive. Would I like to see it banned? Hell no! I'd like to see it go out of style as quickly as possible! I realize that ignorant people have a right to listen to whatever trash they choose. That's a large part of what makes this country great!

So if you don't like Michael Savage, don't listen to him. If you do like listening to him...go for it! That's how we Yanks do it! If you don't want the guy in your country, the adult and civilized thing to do would be to justify your decision in equating him with known murderers.

Sign At An Indiana Business

So, this is apparently true. Tom Owen has a small business in the northern Indiana town of Whiting and he put a sign in the window of his place for all to see. It says,
"WE WOULD RATHER
DO BUSINESS WITH 1000 AL QAEDA TERRORISTS

THAN WITH ONE SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER!"

You are probably outraged at the thought of such an inflammatory statement.
However, we are a society which holds Freedom of Speech as perhaps our greatest liberty.

And after all, it is just a sign.
You may ask what kind of business would dare post such a sign.

Answer: Owen's Funeral Home

Dom DeLuise

Dom DeLuise died yesterday. He was 75.

I think that the man was "born funny!" He didn't have to say much to make you laugh. I never met him, but I met his brother and his family. I became friends with Dom's niece Delores. She and her family lived in Northport, Long Island, NY. They were a down-to-earth family. Delores kept reminding me that she remembered her famous uncle when he was simply "Uncle Dom." Dom was the son of a Brooklyn, NY used car dealer. A family friend had a similar background. That's how I met the DeLuises. They all had a wonderful sense of humor and love for life. I think I join many millions in mourning the loss of a very funny man and a great guy.

Friday Foto - Rhian Sugden

Friday, again, and we turn our attention to our British cousins for a real nifty picture of Rhian Sugden. Those of you who read newspapers, in England she's been a Page Three girl for the Sun. She's also been featured in Maxim, Loaded, Zoo & Nuts. She claims to be "stopped everywhere she goes" with people (young men) wanting her autograph. Yeah...that's what I'd want...her autograph!
