It's the Yellow Sac Spider, native to North America. The affected cars were assembled in the USA...in Michigan.(...)
The problem is that these little darlings (the spiders) may weave a web in the evaporative canister vent line and this may cause a restriction in the line. This may cause pressure problems in the fuel tank as the emission control system tries to purge vapors. The pressure could cause the fuel tank to eventually crack, resulting in spillage. 20 cases have been found.
The "fix" is the installation of some kind of a spring that prevents the building of a spider web.
Really, it's just a matter of getting (& keeping) some...eh..."bugs" out...
