I remember when Notre Dame was a Catholic University! As a lifelong practicing Catholic, I see a lot of dumb moves in the Catholic Church. Most of them involve using the money, donated by the faithful, to bury the Priests' scandals. This is serious stuff - it continues and it causes a lot of Catholics to stay away from church. Me? (Thanks for asking!) I don't worship "the church," my attention is "higher."
This brings us to the controversy surrounding the choice of having President Obama speak at the University of Notre Dame's Commencement Exercise. This doesn't sit well with a lot of people, including some within the student body, some parents, some faculty and some alums. Well, he is the President, ya know. He's in favor of abortion. The Catholic Church is opposed to abortion. The President was invited to speak. He should speak. He's smart enough to accept the invite. He's also smart enough to avoid any anti Catholic issues...like abortion. He's also smart enough to know that the fastest growing segment of the USA population is Hispanic. Their religion? Yup - Catholic.
So, if you are Catholic and you are upset about this, don't be. I wonder how many Catholics think that the President should not speak at ND while they voted for him in November? Obama speaking at Notre Dame? He's a politician! Maybe it would be suitable to invite an accomplished humanitarian or successful (job creating) businessman, to speak. You know, somebody who's not campaigning.
