I am applying for a job as toll worker at the New Jersey Turnpike! This is where the money is! A recent audit shows that a toll worker with a base salary of $73,469 had a banner year with bonuses and overtime, etc, etc, to the point where he grossed $321,985!
The audit says that the turnpike folks wasted more than $43 million on unnecessary perks and bonuses. Taxpayers also paid $430,000 for free E-ZPass transponders for turnpike employees to get to work and nearly $90,000 in scholarships for workers' kids.
If you drive on a toll-free interstate highway, this makes even less sense!
With all of this waste, keep in mind that tolls on the New Jersey Turnpike are set for another increase in 2012.
