Actually I heard about this, back in September of 2009. The Ford Motor Company is dropping their Mercury brand. Why? Because they were not selling, that's why. During the 2000 model year 359,143 Mercurys were sold. In 2009 only 92,299 were sold. Personally, I think this happened because the Mercury models lost their identities. They were no longer "unique." I've always believed in the importance of being unique...Mercury became as unique as the other car companies.
So, after 71 years, Edsel Ford's idea - the Mercury - is done. My memories of Mercury are seeded in the '50s. (The picture is of a 1952 Merc') It was a cool car, more special than a common Ford and not as stuffy as a Lincoln. Things change. Ford recently sold their Jaguar, Range Rover and Volvo brands. No bankruptcy, no government loans.....and now, no Mercury.
