Walmart fired four employees who defended themselves against an armed shoplifter.
This happened last month at a Walmart in Utah. Workers, (or associates as they are called), say they saw a shopper hide a notebook beneath his clothing. The shopper was met at the exit by a (I love this) Loss-Prevention Coordinator. The shopper was led to the Loss-Prevention Room where three other Loss-Prevention Coordinators were waiting. (...)
The shoplifter pulled out the notebook and a hand gun, saying, "It's cocked, guys...don't make me do this."
One of the employees was able to wrest the gun from the suspect, who was then taken to the ground until police arrived.
Unfortunately for these four, Walmart company policy states that employees are not to engage armed suspects and they were all subsequently fired for violating Walmart's policy AP09. It's Walmart's policy on dealing with shoplifters. Employees are allowed to use "reasonable force" to limit movements of struggling suspects. If a weapon comes out, however, associates must "disengage" and "withdraw."
If this sounds as stupid to you as it does to me, I have a suggestion. You can register your opposition to the firing of these heroes by shopping elsewhere. Preferably at a locally owned and operated store.
Have you heard about this on TV? I mean NETWORK TV? No. Walmart spends a lot of money with Network TV.
