The term Uncle Sam had been around since the time of the War Of 1812. Between that time and 1852, Uncle Sam was just another term for the Federal Government. On May 13, 1852, Uncle Sam first appeared in a political cartoon in the New York Lantern Weekly. The actual cartoon appears on the right.
