2 ABC Soaps Go Down The Drain

Susan Lucci / All My Children

The fabric of American daytime television is changing. First, we had the loss of the game show. Now, we hear of the cancellation of two long-running soap operas, All My Children and One Life To Live.

Instead of improving the quality of these daytime dramas (to increase viewership) ABC has decided to replace the soaps with "cable quality," lower budget reality shows.

In the 1970s, there were nearly 20 soaps being broadcast in the U.S.

Only four will survive: NBC's Days of Our Lives, CBS' Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful and ABC's General Hospital.
