The Times Of London, owned by Rupert Murdock's News Corp., recently went to a pay format. It now costs roughly $3/week to read much of the on-line format of the paper. I know that there's no such thing as a "free lunch," but if they do it right, they will make money, on-line, with no charge to the reader! If you have a really, really good website with a large audience, the profit is in the ADVERTISEMENTS! It is far cheaper (and quicker) to host an on-line news site than it is to produce the antiquated "paper edition." Paper, ink, distribution, etc. they can all be things of the past with an innovative on-line news presentation.
As it is, the Times of London has lost 90% of their on-line viewership.
This is just another case of highly paid executives making stupid decisions.
